Your Heroine's Journey: Ageless and Heroic
Learning the Heroine’s Journey in Her Suppressed History and Yours in a Writing Circle with authors Kate Farrell and Mary Mackey
Celebrate Women’s History Month: March 16th, 1 – 5 PM
This interactive seminar is geared for pairs of attendees from different generations and for single attendees who are interested in bridging the generations. Pairs might include: Mothers and daughters, aunts and nieces, grandmothers and granddaughters, mother figures with younger women, and all other combinations that span two or three age groups. Come by yourself or in pairs! We will make sure everyone in the group is paired.
We will learn from one another and tell our journeys, inspired by literature of the long ago matriarchal cultures told in ancient folklore and in re-imagined, meticulously researched historical fiction.
Here’s what we plan to cover in this 4-hour writing seminar:
Welcome and Introductions
Kate and Mary will compare the heroine’s journey with the hero’s journey and share how writing about the heroine’s journey empowered their lives. They will review the concept of The Maid, Matron, Crone, the triple headed goddess of shared wisdom across generations.
Mary Mackey, an awarding winning poet and New York Times best-selling author of novels, begins the workshop:
- Shares research of Marija Gimbutas of the goddess culture of Old Europe (5,000 BCE)
- Reads excerpts from the novels in her best-selling Earthsong series
- Provides prompts for free writes
- Pair sharing of writings with active listening
Kate Farrell, a renown storyteller and award-winning author, continues the workshop:
- Shares the feminine quest scholarship of Marie-Louise Von Franz and Clarissa Pinkola Estés
- Tells two tales of the heroine’s journey from the oral tradition of Old Europe
- Provides prompts for free writes
- Pair sharing of writings with active listening
Group sharing of selected writings of the day with active listening and discussion

Meet Our Seminar Co-Presenters
Award winning authors Mary Mackey and Kate Farrell
She is co-author of a monograph, Effects of Storytelling: An Ancient Art for Modern Classrooms, 1982; author of Word Weaving: A Teaching Sourcebook, 1984; producer and co-author of a videotape, “Word Weaving: The Art of Storytelling,” 1983; and author of the professional book, Storytelling: A Guide for Teachers, Scholastic, 1991. She is senior author of Storytelling in Our Multicultural World, a language development program for early childhood education, Zaner-Bloser Educational Publishers, a division of Highlights for Children, 1994.
Farrell has edited and contributed to several award-winning anthologies of personal narrative on women’s issues. Her award-winning new book is a how-to guide on the art of storytelling for adults, Story Power: Secrets to Creating, Crafting, and Telling Memorable Stories, 2020—Winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Award. Kate lives in San Francisco.
Mary is also the author of eight collections of poetry including Sugar Zone, winner of a PEN Award; and The Jaguars That Prowl Our Dreams, winner of a Women’s Spirituality Book Award from the California Institute of Integral Studies and the 2019 Eric Hoffer Award for Best Book Published by a Small Press. In 2023, Mary’s book Creativity was nominated for a Northern California Book Award in Creative Nonfiction, and her screenplay The Stand-In was an official selection for Best Feature Film Screenplay by the City of Angels Women’s Film Festival in Los Angeles.
One of the founders of the California State University Sacramento Creative Writing Program, Mary taught Creative Writing, Film, and Memoir Writing at CSUS for over three decades. During her years there, she was nominated three times for the Faculty Outstanding Teaching Award. “Mary Mackey is a national treasure.” ----Tulsa Book Review
